Thumbs up to any idea

The idea behind Vote with Bitcoin is simple. If you have an idea or a project, there will always be people who will support your endeavour with a thumbs-up, an upvote or a small contribution, because they like you or the cause, or they just want to see, how it would play out.

Vote with bitcoin is a tangible upvote, it’s a statement that you see something in the potential of the idea or in people behind it and with a small contribution you tell them to continue to dig in the set direction.

“I’m a man of ideas and I’ve met many people like myself. Some of them even collect domain names for all of their ideas because they think that one day they will have the opportunity to pursuit them. Vote with bitcoin is a tool for all the people like myself – if you can define an idea, then you can see directly how much real support is there for it.”

About the platform

At the moment we are an early stage idea. We have a vision, the team, experience and knowledge to plan, design and develop the this upvoting platform for any idea, cause or project.

Design

People like upvoting stuff as we see it on Reddit, Product Hunt or Hacker News, to name a few. These projects are our inspiration to design Vote with Bitcoin with simplicity in mind, where emphasis are on ideas and teams, not on the environment. We are committed to design and develop a lightweight platform to support access for projects from areas with slower internet connections.

All projects accepted

It is one of the cornerstones of our project, to be open to any idea submitted from anywhere in the world by anyone. We will eliminate the visibility of low-quality projects by adding all new projects deep on the platform and only upvoted projects will see a better exposure. This puts an obvious responsibility on project owners in raising support for their ideas. We will be developing tools for backers to have better options to assess project owners and their credibility.

Upvoting

We will be implementing a three layer upvoting system, where all newly submitted projects will be added on the page “New projects”, then they will climb to “Upvoted” page where there will be projects with some support, and on the first page, we will have “Popular now” projects. We are now working on an algorithm that would weigh in time, the number of upvotes, total funds raised and popularity of the project, thus eliminating the impact of the potential flood of transactions.

Reporting

Every project will have a “Report” button that will trigger our attention to any project that might be violating laws or social norms. People violating the law will be reported to the competent authorities and other offenders will be banned from the platform.

Accepting other crypto currencies

We will be accepting all major cryptocurrencies, thus eliminating the impact of Bitcoin network congestion. All payments in other currencies will be automatically exchanged for Bitcoin and funded directly to the project owners bitcoin address. If the congestion continues and fees grow, we might simply start using other currency for settlements. At the moment we don’t plan to implement card payments.

Raise funds or monetize content

We have created these buttons that are embeddable on any web page. If you are running a website for your project, this is where your supporters base is and soon we’ll get used to supporting ideas, authors and whole projects by upvoting stuff via these buttons. We plan to integrate them with all major content management platforms and share button libraries.

Use these buttons to Upvote and support this project:

Development priorities

  • Upvoting algorithm
  • Lightweight design & content management
  • Adding other currencies
  • Trust builders & fraud protection
  • Edit and manage your project

Is Vote with Bitcoin a crowdfunding platform?

We took a bite too big when we thought it’s possible to make a classical crowdfunding platform out of this simple idea because it’s not. In classical crowdfunding there are certain rules that determine how the platform operates and there are certain expectations from backers. Our intention is far more simple – we want a platform, where to test ideas and to gauge potential support. It can become a place to start a discussion about the potential of an idea and to collect small financial contributions for the project owner to be able to work on it. With an upvote on Vote with Bitcoin you shouldn’t expect anything tangible back.

Full responsibility on backers

We believe that backers should take the full responsibility for their contributions. Don’t invest more than you can afford. Do a fair assessment of an idea, the author, the team and all the factors, and make a decision to contribute only if you believe it’s the right thing to do and you can afford it.

As the upvotes are real transactions to a bitcoin address, they are final and there will be no later discussion, chargebacks or other settlements. You backed an idea or a person from what you saw and they don’t owe you anything. Most probably it is in their interest to prove they were right on their idea and they really want to make something out of it for a common good and that should be the only reason you backed them.

HELP US BUILD THE FUTURE OF CROWDSOURCING

With each upvote, we will be more certain that the project is necessary and there are many more people who want to make a simple & decentralized test network a reality. We know this idea is great and we need your help to get it over the edge.

With love and many ideas,

Day 10

A week has passed and we have a lot of new updates to announce!

We have summarised all the feedback that we have received during these days, and we have improved our platform both in functionality and homepage layout accordingly. The new homepage is now displaying all the open projects with short descriptions sorted in three hierarchical sections.

As for very near future, this is what we have come up with:

  • Register/login with Linkedin/Twitter to verify project author’s identity
  • The possibility to edit existing projects
  • Everyone who backed a project will be given an original backer badge
  • Projects will automatically move up the hierarchical sections by gaining upvotes:
    • New: 0-5 upvotes
    • Upvoted: 5+ upvotes
    • Front Page: projects from authors with original backer badge
  • Complete redesign of the project page

There is still a long way to go in order to polish the platform, but with all the recent improvements we have decided what shape it will take in the near future to make it a success.

As always, you are welcome to join the discussion on the project here: https://www.reddit.com/r/votewithbitcoin/

Day2

Hello friends,

We spent the whole day to try to understand, where did we go wrong with our campaign. We’ve been actively communicating with many of you and received a lot of feedback. Thank you very much! Among other activities, we did a small poll on https://21.co and asked 250+ users a few questions, and among other questions was the classical:

How likely is it that you would recommend Vote with Bitcoin to a friend or colleague?

Here are a few extracts from the positive replies:

“All in all it’s an amazing idea”, Joern B.
“Sunds like a great idea…”, Meinhard B.
“It’s a great idea, but..”, Thomas L.
“Looks good, always nice to see alternatives”, Jeffrey D.
“Looks promising.”, John B.

We knew that initially our idea was good, but then we screwed it with leaning into the classical crowdfunding space, where there are strong players, rules and expectations. We never wanted to become a preorder shop and to buy in with perks and rewards. Upvoting stuff with coins because you feel like is what we meant to build – no central authority to judgement, no fees, no restrictions.

We’ll get back to our initial idea and we’ll present it to you for discussionas soon as possible. Stay tuned for updates.

Day1

It’s been a tough first day.

We’ve been active on many channels, including Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, 21.co and more; the main take-away is that we need to continue to dig. The industry is hot and there is a huge potential to combine opportunities provided by bitcoin with positive aspects of crowdfunding.

A lot of the feedback is harsh. You can get a sense here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/6dx1x9/

We are very early into the campaign and we realize that it’s necessary to address the trust issue with campaign owners, as well as the high risks of potential fraud and minimal tools to tackle insolvency.

We’ll have a brainstorm on these issues and soon we’ll come up with a solution.

Still, we continue to believe that crowdfunding should be decentralized, fast & easy, as well as globally accessible.
